Lion the king of the jungle



The lion  is one of the five big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger.Lions have strong, compact bodies and powerful forelegs, teeth, and jaws for pulling down and killing prey. Young lions have light spotting on their coats that will disappear as they grow up.The lion's name, similar in many Romance languages, is derived from the Latin leo.The lion's closest relatives are the other species of the genus Panthera: the tiger, the jaguar, and the leopard.The majority of lions kept in zoos.It is extinct in the wild due to excessive hunting.  Males and females look distinctly different.Lions spend much of their time resting and are inactive for about 20 hours per day. Although lions can be active at any time.They spend an average of two hours a day walking and 50 minutes eating.The only social member of the cat  family, lions live in large groups called (prides).

Lionesses do most of the hunting for their pride.Females do almost all of the hunting. They are more effective hunters, as they are smaller.The lionesses do most of the hunting for the pride.Hunting generally is done in the dark by the lionesses. They often hunt in groups of two or three, using teamwork.Male lions grow larger than females, reaching up to ten feet long females reach up to nine feet long.Females give birth to one to six cubs after a gestation of about three and a half months. Cubs nurse for six months, but start eating meat at three months. Females raise the cubs and are the primary hunters, although males will sometimes join the females during a hunt. 
 The male lion associated with the pride usually stays and watches over young cubs until the lionesses return from the hunt. . Lions vary in color but typically sport light yellow-brown coats. Mature male lions are unique among big cats due the thick brown or black manes that encircle their necks and protect them while fighting.

Both male and female lions roar, and that roar can be heard over five miles away.Lions consume a wide variety of prey, from wildebeest, impala, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and wild hogs to sometimes rhinos.For all of their roaring and growling,  lions are family animals and truly social in their own communities. A male's loud roar, usually heard after sunset.

 When a new male becomes part of the pride it is not unusual for him to kill all the cubs.Males and females fiercely defend against any outside lions that attempt to join their pride. After the kill(hunting) the males usually eat first, lionesses next and the cubs get what's left.Tigers are lions' closest relatives. Without their coats, lion and tiger bodies are so similar that only experts can tell them apart.
A lion's roar can be heard up to five miles away.By saving lion habitat, we protect these and many other animals.
