KHEWRA ,Pakistan's largest salt mine
Khewra Salt Mine is situated in Pind Dadan khan about 200 km from Islamabad and Lahore. World's second largest salt mine has 18 working levels and 40 kilometres of tunnels. The main tunnel at ground level was developed during British rule by Dr. Warth, a mining engineer in 1872.The mine is the largest source of salt in Pakistan with more than 350,000 tons produced per year. An electric railway has been working in the mine since the 1930s.
Among the earliest structure built within the mine is the small Badshahi Mosque and a small salt minaret to attract tourists. A small salt versions of the Great Wall of China, the Mall road of Murree, Lahore’s Shimla hill, and the Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore. Both the mosque and the miniatures are built from salt bricks. At times, the many colors and bricks of light give the mine a sort of disco-Yellow-Brick-Road look. There are many other things or sights include a 75-meter-tall "assembly hall" chamber with stairs spiraling up the walls, a 25-foot-long Salt Bridge called the Pul-saraat, Minar-e-Pakistan, Faisal Mosque.The Khewra salt mine even has its own fully functioning postal office, for use by the workers.
Salt is very beautiful like stones.Its amazing to see rock-solid-salt all over, especially as this mine has all three colors, white, pink & dark pink stones.A large number of salt-water holes where one can't stand in it for more than 10 minutes & can also never drown as its very thick salty water coming from the mountains especially during rain.
This is a sure tourist spot for all to come & look at history. At places rock salt is 99% pure. Salt is transparent, white, pink, reddish to beef-color red. It is a beautiful place to visit. Another interesting aspect is these centuries-old salt mine is offering experimental asthma therapy, attracting patients from all over the world.You will find beautifull pink crystals of salt, you will see kilometers of corridors and very high rooms, where the guide will fly paper made balloon.
